I should have skipped CVS

I had said earlier in the week that I was skipping CVS. Well I decided to go run and do a transaction. I was going to do the Pert and the Cover Girl. They are good deals right? With the appearance of the new CVS 2/10 I felt it's be a good deal. I stopped at my favorite store and did the Cover Girl. It was fine. No problems at all.

I skipped over to a friends house who had another coupon for the Cover Girl so I stopped again at a diffrent store near her house and I was going to do the Pert and the Cover Girl there. Well, that store was a disaster. It was a mess and I should have just walked out, but the manager was so rude and ugly to me.

Back track a minute with me. The Pert is $3.69 BOGO this week. I called Customer Service and talked with a guy about the Qs. Just to make sure I was doing it right. He say CVS does not allow two coupons on a BOGO sale (unless it's a BOGO on a BOGO). The other exception he told me is when the coupon states "Limit One Coupon per Item" It has to specifically state that. Ok - no problem because that's what the Pert Qs say. I was going to use a 1.00/1 and 2.00/1 and pay .69 cents for the two bottles.

Well - the Q beeps. The cashier calls the manager over and the manager is rude. She has this "I don't care - whatever" attitude from the get go. I was really put on the defensive. I tried to explain to her, but she wasn't really interested.

Side note to self** I had heard that this manager was like this - I should have just went to one of my favorite stores (where they talk to me normal!) and by passed this one. So I told her I would call Customer Service. They had already entered all my other Qs. By now there are two customers behind me. I asked her if she could check them on another register while I call customer service. She was like no I won't - void her items. I was like What?!? That's so rude. She had several other cashiers that could have done it easily. She didn't want to do that to her customers she said (umm...I'm a customer too - remember?)

She then told the cashier again - void her transaction. Then she looks at me and tells me I need to leave her store. Ok - that was rude. Rude and totally uncalled for. I was mad by then. I told her I would call customer service and report her and I would never spend another dime in her store. Plus she's on my blacklist now. grrr........

I did call Customer Service again, except this I contacted the comments department instead of the ECB department. Here is the "official" CVS policy on BOGO Qs.

You cannot use two coupons on a BOGO sale. Period. Because the system zeros one out and you aren't technically paying for it. So my advice - don't try it. I know other stores (ie: Walgreens, Albie's and Winn Dixie allow it, but not CVS.)

I ran across town to a CVS where I like the store manager. He's always been a nice guy. Well, come to find out - the district manager was there. The DM and I had a long chat about what happened, couponing in general and what they could do to make things easier - to make it a win-win situation for everyone. He's a nice guy and I can see he's willing to work with everyone.

I did tell him I lost my temper with that other manager. Everyone knows that's my rule of thumb right? Be nice - if it's a total loss just leave and try another store. It's so frustrating to get a different answer from two different CS people. sigh......... I'm disappointed in myself for losing my temper like that. I really try hard to cultivate good relationships with store managers and cashiers. Don't worry ~ I've properly chastised myself and it won't happen again. :(

Now - back to my chat with the DM. He agrees. I would hate to have a few "bad apples" spoil couponing for the rest of us. He wants his stores to be Q friendly and his employees. I have seen a shift in some of the stores and I'm grateful for it. However - it's up to us couponers to make sure we do are part. Read the fine print, make sure the Qs match properly and when in doubt ask a store manager.

On a more shocking note. He asked me if I'd be interested in coming to talk with his store managers about the Extra Care program from a customer point of view. Yeah - I was pretty shocked too. ~ lol.

What do ya'll think? Give me some feedback on this one!!

Wow, I would have lost my temper too. I had a pretty similar situation when I tried to redeem my Planter's coupons at Kroger.

I think it is awesome that you were able to talk to the district manager though. What a unique opportunity he presented you with. I can't wait to hear what you decide!

I used 2 coupons for the Pert on Sunday with no beep and two on Sure, also. Last week we were told that we could not do a BOGO coupon on Life Savers BOGO sale. I had just used one on the shampoo! This is all at the same store! So confusing! I don't want break the rules...I just want to know what the rules are!

I'm not sure I understand the corporate policy - does that mean that you can't technically use the BOGO coupon from the paper on an in-store BOGO sale (to get both free?) I tried at 2 different stores to do the CoverGirl deal this morning and was denied at both (but have read that many people have been successful)...I'm confused.

I too used two $2 off coupons on two bogo bottles of Pert on Sunday. No beeps, no problems.

I was denied the ability to use my BOGO q on the Lifesavers deals last month at a CVS store during our vacation travels. In fact, I was also asked never to return to their store by a clerk, who was also supported by their manager. Shocked, but sent a question via email to CVS corporate and received a written response with my name and her name, title and phone number listing saying that they will honor the BOGO q during a BOGO sale listed at CVS and that I would be able to receive the items for free. The only condition was that they stated that the stores can choose to limit the number of items that each customer is able to purchase at a time.

It came in handy during the recent lifesaver BOGO, I completed one transaction with no problem and received 8 for free. When I went to complete a second transaction with 8 more bags, that is when the red flags went up and the manager gave me some flack. I produced my letter from CVS corporate which she copied, but also ended up honoring getting them for free, but she was not happy.

that is outrageous. How dare she tell you to leave. I've seen you in action and you are totally kind, polite and courteous. I would love for you to represent us and educate the cashiers and managers.

It's hard to not get on the defense when you know you aren't CHEATING the system. When you try and do everything right and they treat you this way is uncalled for. I for one never stray past my two CVS stores because when I do I get ugly stares and issues every SINGLE TIME! My favorite store is awesome and if I can't use something they simply tell me "Girl I dont think that will work let me check with the manager". They know me now and are extremely helpful and nice. Other stores I go to ummmm not so much. Do they realize how much money you bring the store whether you bring in a Q or not? Sad to say the least. I'm with you for blacklisting certain stores. Most of the WAGS stores are blacklisted by me. I have two I go to and they are getting close to that list as well. When she said she didn't want to do that to her customers (the one standing in line behind you) I would have told her. "So I guess treating me with no respect is better than making them move to another line. Oh I get it. Give me my stuff back and please know I will be reporting you." It's hard to hold your tongue on issues but I've learned if you lose it too then you NEVER EVER EVER get what you want in the end. Make sure your van doesn't turn in this CVS again (REMEMBER THIS INCIDENT). And for the record I've met you several times and you've never lost your temper with me ;-) HA HA!

My CVS is completely opposite what he told you. They let me use 2 coupons on and BOGO but will not let me use a BOGO coupon on a BOGO item. I think every district and every CVS is different.

I always use two coupons on the BOGO items and never have a problem at CVS. However, our Walgreens is not coupon friendly and I rarely even go there.

I tried the cover girl coupon at two different stores and the manager said
"no" to this one at both, but they let me use two $1.00 off coupons on a bogo item at both stores.
I think even the store managers at the stores are unsure of the policies.
Still, it was wrong of the manager to be so rude to you and you were right to talk to the district manager.

I sure am sorry you had such an awful experience. I've never been in that particular store, but based on what happened to you, I am going to boycott it as well! Maybe that's what we should do - have an organized boycott of that particular store! That'll teach Ms. McNasty Manager!

Firstly, I think you definitely SHOULD sit on the advisory panel (or whatever it's called.) The most helpful thing CVS can do is to publish their Q policy on their website!! This would be so much better than each couponer having to call the 800 number and getting 10 different answers. There are basically all the same handful of questions out there.

Secondly, I had a Store Manager (my fav. store, and fav. manager) tell me that CVS gets reimbursed for ECBs just like they do for coupons!! So, if you buy Trident and get $1 ECB, and you redeem that Trident ECB on a later purchase, Trident pays CVS $1. (I don't know about a handling fee.)

**** So the stores should jump up and down when we earn and redeem these!!! It's more revenue for them.*** (Of course, it doesn't work for CVS brand items.)

I don't know what it's like in your area but where I live in North Fort Worth I've noticed a difference between CVS stores that used to be Eckerd's vs. the newer CVS stores. They seem to have different POS systems or software. The non-Eckerd stores are more coupon friendly so now I stick with those locations. I'm lucky to have never run in to someone so mean. Good for you for stickiing up for yourself - I think I would have lost it too!

Wow. I've had ONE store manager tell me I couldn't use 2 $1/1's on the All Small&Mighty BOGO sale. So I just went and did it at another store. But good to know that corporate is now stating this as policy....I will try to "behave" from now on. Earlier today I got 4 Covergirl products, used 2 BOGO's q's (making them all free) and 2 $1/1 q's (overage).....guess that was cheating. Oops!

Last night Walgreens told me they wouldn't do the Lifesavers bogo on top of the bogo sale. I rarely go to that one anyway (and used my rebate gift card) and called corporate who told me it was up to each store manager. I had no problem at 2 CVS's with the bogo Covergirl coupons on top of the sale except for a few surprised cashiers eyeing me. My son did the Loreal coupon/bogo with no problem that time.
I could write a book :-) I have all corporate numbers and addresses now. I think Walmart knows me :-)
There is one nasty manager at CVS who told me the photo book deal on the large one was 1 not 2 until I showed her the ad I had brought with. She frowned and walked away. Jewel had a fit when I tried to use the Kool Aid packets for the Planter's coupons.

Love the pictures. Right now my growing stockpile is overflowing the dining room table.

Carlie, I would have lost it too!! I think you should definitely go speak with the managers on the ECB program! They truly don't understand the program as much as the consumers do and helping them see it from our perspective will help make them a better, more customer-focused store!
